Slater’s 50/50 Burgers, Anaheim, CA

Slater's 50/50 Burgers, Anaheim, CA. Burgers, bacon burgers, half bacon half beef burgers, bacon beef, bacon, beef

BURGER: You can’t go wrong with half bacon, half beef burger. Even better when you get to create your own, selecting from a list of things you want on it. The burger itself is great. A bit dry on the top but juicier on the inside. This recent trip I’ve created my 50/50 with grilled pineapple, Slater’s BBQ sauce, thousand island dressing, red onions, tomatoes, pepper jack cheese, lettuce wrap, protein style so no carbs-y buns for me!

I’ve always loved the onion strings they make there. But this time around, they weren’t the same. They used to be tiny and stringy so they were crispy. But now, they’ve changed the batter so it’s all thick, oily, and COLD! It is as if they dipped the onions in batter and oil for 2 seconds and then served straight up cold. Yuck. I inquired with the waitress and she admitted that the strings are made differently now, and offered to “fix” it. 5 minutes later she came back out with the “fixed” onion strings but they still tasted like crap to me. So don’t order the onion strings. They should just call it “onion ROPES.”

Now, on to the SERVICE. When we entered, I asked the hostess if we could sit at the bar (because I didn’t want to wait 20 minutes for a regular table) and she informed me that we can sit at the bar and that it’s full menu. So, great! We found a spot at the bar area. 15 minutes went by, NO ONE came around to serve. I had to walk to the bar and asked for the menu. Some guy finally came around, gave us the STANDARD menu, not the one where you select what you want. I was annoyed. I waited another 10 minutes, no one came by so I had to walk back to the bar for the second time to ask for the paper menus and asked the guy there if we will ever get anyone to serve us. Guess what he told me? You only get appetizers sitting at the bar area. Wait, what? That’s not what the hostess told us! But whatever, the guy said he will get someone to assist regardless. OK, great. Thanks. We finally got a waitress and everything was fine after that.

So, bottom line – Burger = great. Onion strings = DON’T GET. Bar area = no service unless you keep hassling them! Full menu or just appetizers in the bar area? Who knows. It’s a mystery. You just try your own luck. 😛
