The name “Sake 2 Me” was funny enough for me to want to try it out. Also, the 4-star ratings online gave me an extra push. This sushi restaurant has an all-you-can-eat option for $20 a person; but we weren’t in the mood for stuffing ourselves so we just opted for regular dining. Let me just say this – the place is undeserving of their 4-star rating.
Though upon sitting down, we were presented with a very pleasant and yummy surprise – a free appetizer! I’m not sure what it is, but it looks like mixed crab and tuna drizzled with unagi sauce served on 2 crispy shells. This is actually one of the tastiest items of our meal!
And the freebies just didn’t stop there. A few minutes later, a waiter swung by our table and gave us this deep fried sushi cut roll! For FREE again! Wow, already loving this place just for the freebies! (I’m guessing this was a result of someone’s wrong order and they didn’t want to throw it away? Haha! But who cares!) And this was the other best item of our meal. The roll had shrimp and crab inside, then drizzled with unagi and chilli sauces. I’m usually not a fan of deep fried sushi but this was pretty delicious.
Freebies aside, the main sushi rolls that we did order were just not as good. The crunch roll was OK, but the dragon roll – or soft shell crab – tasted weird. First of all, it looked nothing like a dragon. Other sushi restaurants would actually put in the effort to cut and present the soft shell crab to make it look like a dragon, with a head and a tail, and it would actually taste good. Here, you can tell from the picture (right) there was no dragon, and the soft shell crab was probably a bad (and tiny) one so it had a weird sour taste. Yuck. I did not like it one bit.
My spicy scallop hand roll was also a fail. I’m surprised that the last few sushi places I’ve been to cook the scallops. I like my scallop rolls with raw scallops, please!
I do like the oh-so-very-Japanese and somewhat romantic decor and atmosphere of Sake 2 Me. I always enjoy restaurant cleanliness.
I’m on the fence about whether I should come back here again. Perhaps next time I’ll go for the all you can eat option just to sample other types of sushi they have there so I can make an informative decision. But I will not order these non-free rolls again. 😀
