Geisha House, Los Angeles, CA

Geisha House isn’t a typical restaurant for you to go for sushi because everything is so expensive. We came here on a Monday night when most of the menu is 50% off – from sushi, sashimi, appetizers, and hot entrees. So I felt more at ease ordering a bunch of stuff without burning my pocket.

How could I resist the chilean seabass half off? The entree ended up being around $10! You have a choice of grilled and seared; both are good, although seared seabass is a bit softer and more moist, but less flavorful than grilled. Served with asparagus, drizzled in a sweet brown sauce, with tartar sauce on the side.

The bay scallop hand roll was a bit different from what I’m used to. It’s wrapped in sesame soy paper rather than seaweed, and the scallop is in little pieces meshed with rice and a spicy red sauce inside. Tastes kinda mushy.

My friend ordered this pretty looking cherry blossom which has the same stuff as the bay scallop hand roll – spicy scallop mixed with rice – then stuffed inside a sliced-up ball of avocado. The scallop is quite good, filling, and goes well with the avocado.

Since it’s half off night, I thought I’d go for desserts. I don’t think I’ve ever had cinnamon ice cream before. One order has 5 scoops cleverly served on a glass full of ice to keep it from melting. It was yummy!

My friend got deep fried banana served with vanilla bean ice cream which was also super yum.

But overall, this place is a true trendy “Hollywood-y” Asian fusion restaurant that serves average sushi at high prices. It is dark and noisy, even when were sitting in a private room. It could be a romantic place for a date but talking would be hard to do. There is another location in Santa Ana and I might just go there on another Monday night so I can get the chilean seabass again. …MmMm seabass…
