Mama Lu’s Dumpling House, Monterey Park, CA

It’s been a while since I’ve been to a dumplings-specific restaurant since Man Doo Rang. Yes, they have a restaurant that serves dumplings, among other Chinese dishes.

If you’ve never had dumplings before, it’s basically dough rolled into pretty looking balls with fillings of meat and veggies inside, then steamed, broiled, deep fried, baked, or with soup. Good dumplings should be moist and savory, and eaten while steaming, so hot that it burns your tongue upon first bite. OK, maybe not that.

Here are some various kinds of dumplings: pork, steamed in a pot.

Chives and pork dumplings.

Fried dumplings. This is my favorite one, just because it’s fried. 😀 Nice and crispy.

In Vietnamese, this is called rau muong. It’s also water spinach, river spinach, water morning glory, or simply Chinese spinach.

I thought this was an interesting choice of flavor for spare ribs – spare ribs with coffee sauce. However, I’m not even sure if I tasted any coffee at all. It has this overwhelmingly deep and sweet taste. The bone-in meat is partially fatty, which makes each rib soft rather than dry. Overall, I liked it a lot. 🙂
