Saigon de Pho, Main Place, Santa Ana, CA

I must say, it’s a huge risk to open up a swanky new pho restaurant inside and in the middle of a shopping mall – not the food court – where there isn’t a lot of traffic, sometimes even on the weekends. If my aunt hadn’t told me about Saigon de Pho, I probably would not have known about it. But, on the flip side, there would be too much competition to open one in Westminster/Garden Grove areas saturated with pho restaurants with huge Vietnamese population.

At first, I was skeptical, because it felt a little weird walking into a posh-looking pho restaurant in the middle of the mall, right across from Forever 21. Not your usual view while dining. But I’m a huge believer and supporter in mom and pop restaurants (and great food, of course), and being an adventurous foodie, how I can not try out a new and clean noodle restaurant just steps away from Macy’s? 😀

The first thing that came to mind was the price. $8 for a bowl of pho, as expected. OK, a little more than a typical bowl of pho you’d find in Westminster for about $4.75, but I have to keep in mind they’re probably getting kicked in the butt with mall rent. I think the pho here is just…okay. Nothing screamingly jumping-out-of-my-seat delicious, but I do like the fact that they gave it a lot of meat – thin slices of rare filet mignon and well done flank. The bowl is served in a shiny square tray which is a nice added touch of class. 😉 I also got myself egg rolls for appetizers for $6 (inexpensive) and they were not bad. A little on the oily side, but there’s actually real ground pork meat inside instead of just veggies.

Of course, they can’t have a restaurant that serves only pho. Their menu also consists of rice, vermicelli (rice noodles), and various beef, pork, chicken dishes.

The one thing that sets this place apart from other typical Westminster pho restaurants is its cleanliness and modern decor. Very swanky look and feel. There’s a huge wall with a running waterfall giving you a real calm and serene feeling. There is couch and bar seating with flat screen TVs. And all employees wear black uniforms. That’s something you rarely see at Vietnamese restaurants.
