Valley View Hotel and Casino, The Buffet, Valley Center, CA

Unlimited lobster. All day. FREEEE? Who am I to say no? 😀

Valley View Hotel and Casino “The Buffet” has been running a special promotion for probably some time: You sign up for their Players Club – at no cost – and in turn, they give you one complimentary pass to their buffet which serves lobster and crab legs all day starting at 2pm. Win!

Oh, but wait, as the expression goes – nothing is ever free. Technically, it costs you not the money, but time and patience. We spontaneously decided to make a trip out here in the morning to get our lobster/crab legs on since their dinner buffet starts so early. The drive is 1.5 hours, on winding roads, up the mountain, onto Indian Reservation Land. We got there, headed on over to the Players Club to sign up (they don’t allow online sign-ups because obviously, they want people to come in to the casino hoping they’d gamble their money away), got our cool Players Club card, and rushed on over to the Buffet line. Little did we know, reservation is required. D’oh! The next availability was 4pm, which leaves us 2+ hours to kill before we can come back just to get in line to enter the buffet. They REALLY want you to spend time at the casino and burn your pockets. For unfortunately for them, neither one of us gambles. So, ha! We got back in line at around 3:40pm, and we didn’t sit down until past 6pm. We lost 4 hours just waiting around.

So, to summarize, we basically jumped through 5 different hoops for those damn FREE lobsters:

1) The ultimate mountainous drive ~1.5 hours
2) Stand in the Players Club line to sign up ~20 minutes
3) Wait around till “reservation time” ~2 hours
4) Stand in the “reservation line” ~20 minutes
5) Move from the “reservation line” into the “real buffet line” ~2 hours

Yeah…

Granted, it gave us some time to check out the casino, which is small and has nothing much to see, except for the “Hotel and Event Center” which is a totally different world once you step inside. Contemporary and swanky decor, plenty of comfortable seating, and there’s an infinity pool outside patio overlooking the hills and mountains. We killed time by hanging out here and taking pictures, which was way better than back at the casino inhaling all the nasty smokes.

Now, on to the food:

As you can see, we loaded up on lobsters and crab legs to make our 4-hour wait worthwhile. And I must say, I was impressed. The lobster tails are quite big and meaty, and the crab legs were also at decent size and split in half. Both very tasty. The crab legs are frozen, however, you can request for them to be steamed. This was the only time I tried other other stuff such as Chinese ribs, prime rib, tempura shrimp, chowmein, salmon and oyster. But seeing that my friend was only going for crab legs and lobster (I take full credit on turning him on to this stuff and now that’s all he ever thinks about!) I figured I’d do the same. I had two or three more plates with nothing but crab legs and lobsters.

Ahhhh… here are the two very reasons we still had our sanity. Lobsters and crab legs. We were worried they’d run out of lobsters by the time we sit down, but our worries instantly vanished as we saw this huge stock of giant lobster tails just waiting for us. The only thing that annoyed me was that you can only get one lobster tail at a time, and they have a person in charge handing them out one by one, so you’d have to keep making rounds to come back. Unless you’re a man, and the person in charge is a woman, she will voluntarily give you two, or three, just because…! But if you’re a woman, and the person in charge is also a woman, GOOD LUCK. Yup, I’ve witnessed gender preference right here at the lobster buffet line. For crab legs, however, go nuts.

More food that I didn’t eat. Haha. Prime rib, cilantro rice, fried catfish, coconut shrimp, cabbage and bacon. I only got a small taste of the prime rib, and it was OK.

Sausages, roast turkey, ribs, Chinese food (fried rice, ribs, orange chicken, chowmein, tofu). I wouldn’t waste my appetite on this since you can get this stuff anywhere else.

I was impressed with their huge selection of desserts. They have real ice cream! There’s also: chocolate mousse, creme brule, cream puffs, white mocha fudge, cakes, and square pies.

More desserts! Mousses, brownies, chocolate cakes, various pastries.

Cakes, mini pies, bread pudding, cinnamon rolls, cheesecakes, biscuits.

Ice cream, fudges, frosty candy sticks (?), and cupcakes. I really wish I had the superpower to consume every one of these desserts and not get full, or fat. 😀
